Electronic Steering Lock Repairs for Mercedes
The electronic steering lock (ESL) is a security feature that is designed to prevent your vehicle from being stolen. However, if it malfunctions, this will prevent you from driving your car and make it completely inoperable. It's important, therefore, to recognise the symptoms and know what to do should they occur.
ESL issues are common in many Mercedes models as well as Volkswagens and some other European brands. At Northside Car Keys, we are fully familiar with the problem and have the knowledge and equipment to carry out Mercedes ESL repairs quickly and effectively so you're back on the road with a minimum of delay.
When Mercedes ESL Replacement or Repair is Necessary
Electronic steering lock repairs for Mercedes are generally necessary when any of the following issues occur:
- The key will not turn in the ignition. This will sometimes happen only occasionally, typically when the weather becomes colder, but can become more frequent as the situation gets worse.
- The key will turn but the engine doesn't start. In these instances, there may also be no dashboard lights showing.
- The steering lock isn't released when the key is turned or may not be activated when the key is removed from the ignition.
- Diagnosis fault codes A25464, A25407, A25408, A25409 and A225408 will indicate problems with the ESL.
Mercedes cars with an ESL require a signal from it to allow the engine to be started. If this signal isn't received, then other computers will, for safety reasons, prevent the car being started. The problem is often caused by a small DC motor that winds the lock peg in and out of the splined steering column. This motor will wear over time and eventually fail so that the listed problems occur.
If the faults are intermittent, it's important you deal with them quickly. If not, they will get worse and eventually lead to failure of the ESL so that the car becomes inoperable and more costly to repair.
