When a key refuses to turn on a busy northside road or in a Nundah driveway, the problem usually started weeks earlier as a slight stiffness or a key that needed a wiggle. Ignition repair covers the diagnosis and repair of the barrel, switch and steering-lock parts that let a vehicle start and keep it secure, and it is far easier to arrange before the fault turns into a breakdown.
Northside Car Keys offers ignition repairs across Brisbane North from our workshop in Herston, on the inner edge of the northern suburbs. Our mobile automotive locksmiths travel to homes, workplaces and roadsides between Kedron Brook and the Pine River, dealing with worn barrels, failed switches and electronic steering-lock faults on supported cars, trucks and motorcycles.
Warning Signs Of A Failing Ignition
Ignition faults rarely announce themselves clearly. Plenty of drivers live with a sticky key for months, until one morning it simply won't move. Watch for:
- A key that has to be jiggled or pushed in further before it will turn
- Resistance at one particular position, such as moving from accessory to on
- A key that spins loosely without clicking through its usual stops
- A key that won't come out after the engine is switched off
- An ignition that stays in the start position instead of springing back
- Doors that unlock with the key while the engine stays silent
- No dashboard lights when the key reaches the on position
- A steering wheel that stays locked after the key is turned
- A fault that used to happen now and then and now happens most days
If the key won't move, stop rather than reaching for pliers or extra force. A snapped blade left in the barrel adds an extraction job to the repair and can damage the wafers further.
Ruling Out The Key Before Repairing The Ignition
Part of every ignition job is confirming that the ignition is really at fault. A worn or damaged key can mimic barrel failure almost exactly, and no amount of ignition work will fix a key that has lost its cut profile.
Clues that point to the key include a blade that is visibly bent or rounded at the edges, a cracked remote housing, or a transponder chip that has dropped out of the head. If a spare key starts the vehicle without any trouble, the original key is usually the culprit.
When every key catches at the same point, or the spare struggles just as much as the original, attention shifts to the ignition itself. Our locksmiths check the key and the ignition together and explain what they find before recommending a repair, so you only pay for work that addresses the actual fault.
How We Repair Worn Ignition Barrels
Inside a standard ignition barrel sits a stack of small spring-loaded parts, usually called wafers, and sometimes pins, discs or tumblers. A typical ignition holds somewhere between eight and twelve of them, and they must line up with the cuts on the key before the barrel can rotate. Once even one wafer wears, the key starts to catch or bind.
Our process involves taking the ignition out of the vehicle, stripping the barrel down, fitting new wafers in place of the worn ones and servicing the assembly before it goes back in. We replace worn wafers instead of pulling them out, because removing wafers makes an ignition easier to turn but also easier to defeat. Every barrel repair of this kind also includes a fresh key blade cut to the vehicle's key code, so an old, worn blade doesn't start wearing down the newly repaired barrel.
Ignition Switch And Electronic Steering Lock Faults
Not every starting fault lives in the barrel. When the key turns smoothly but nothing happens, or it rotates further than it should without settling into position, a broken actuator or a failed ignition switch further along the column may be to blame.
Many late-model vehicles also rely on an Electronic Steering Lock (ESL), which forms part of the security and starting system. When an ESL fails, the vehicle can become completely unusable even though the key and battery are fine. ESL failure can show up as:
- A key that refuses to turn
- A key that turns while the engine won't crank
- A dashboard that stays dark
- Steering that remains locked
- A problem that comes and goes before becoming constant
Northside Car Keys diagnoses, repairs and replaces ESL units for several supported manufacturers, and we stock replacement parts for common ignition-switch and steering-lock failures. Where a faulty ESL can be restored, we repair it. Where it can't, or where a new unit makes more financial sense, we fit a replacement, often on site so a non-starting car doesn't need a tow.
Stuck Keys In Audi And Volkswagen Models
Some Audi and Volkswagen models are known for an ignition fault that traps the key in the off, accessories or on position. In the worst cases the engine keeps running because the key can't return to off.
We run a dedicated repair for this fault. It covers selected model years of the Audi A3, TT and R8, along with Volkswagen models including the Golf, Polo, Amarok, Beetle, Caddy, Jetta, Tiguan and Multivan. Because eligibility varies by year, we confirm it from your vehicle details before booking. Parts for these jobs are kept in stock, many are finished at the vehicle's location, and the repair carries a 24-month warranty.
Ignition Damage After An Attempted Theft
An ignition that has been forced, drilled or snapped during an attempted theft needs more than a routine service. A damaged barrel, broken steering lock or loose column shroud can leave the vehicle unable to start or unsafe to drive.
Report the incident to Queensland Police first, and keep the report number for your insurer. Then call us with the make, model and a description of the damage. Our locksmiths can inspect the ignition and steering lock, tell you whether the existing parts can be saved and talk you through the options where replacement is needed.

Ignition Failure On A Northside Clearway
Ignition faults don't wait for a convenient parking spot. Several of Brisbane North's busiest arterial roads carry clearway restrictions, and Brisbane City Council treats clearways as tow-away zones, with fines on top of the tow. Where a clearway sign shows no hours, the restriction applies around the clock.
If the ignition fails in traffic, switch on your hazard lights and get yourself somewhere safe first. When it's safe to roll or push the car out of a clearway or travel lane, doing so reduces the risk of it being removed before help arrives. Tell us when you call whether the vehicle is in a clearway or time-limited zone, and we'll give you a straight answer on whether mobile attendance or a tow to our workshop is the more practical choice.
Mobile Service Across Brisbane North
Our mobile team handles ignition repairs seven days a week across the northern suburbs, attending vehicles that are immobilised, locked or unsafe to drive. That might be a driveway in Wavell Heights, a work car park in Virginia or a roadside in Bald Hills.
When a workshop visit makes more sense, our Butterfield Street workshop in Herston opens Monday to Saturday. It has straightforward tow-truck access and secure space to hold a vehicle when a repair can't be finished in the same visit. Please book before you arrive, as our locksmiths are often out on mobile jobs.
To get the right help quickly, call with the registration or VIN, where the vehicle is and a short description of what the key does when you try to turn it.
Why Repairing Early Saves Time And Money
A worn ignition only gets worse with use. Booking an inspection while the car still starts lets you:
- Choose a repair time that suits you instead of calling for emergency help
- Stop a worn key from damaging the remaining wafers
- Keep serviceable components rather than replacing the whole assembly
- Avoid towing fees and the cost of reaching a stranded vehicle
- Confirm whether the fault sits in the key or the ignition
- Lower the chance of breaking down a long way from home
Pricing depends on the vehicle, the fault, the parts involved and the labour needed. Two vehicles from the same manufacturer can use completely different ignition and steering-lock systems, so the registration or VIN gives us a far clearer basis for a quote than the make alone.
Why Brisbane North Drivers Choose Us
Jon and Lauren Dearness founded Northside Car Keys in 2016, and our licensed team now brings more than 20 years of combined experience with vehicle keys, locks, ignitions and starting systems.
Our Managing Director, Jon Dearness, trained as an apprentice locksmith in Brisbane and has spent over a decade working solely on vehicles. Toby, our Senior Automotive Locksmith, completed his training and more than ten years of locksmith work in the United Kingdom before joining the team in 2019.
We work on older and late-model cars, trucks, vans, motorcycles and other supported vehicles. Ignitions are dismantled and properly serviced rather than given a quick spray of lubricant. Our standard ignition work is backed by a 12-month warranty, and the dedicated Audi and Volkswagen repair by 24 months.
Ignition Repair Throughout Brisbane North
Our northside service area fans out from the inner north towards the Pine River, taking in Kedron, Wooloowin and Nundah through Aspley, Geebung, Zillmere and Boondall to Bracken Ridge, Bald Hills and Brighton. Kedron Brook winds east across the area towards Moreton Bay, while the Boondall Wetlands, the Brisbane Entertainment Centre and Brisbane Airport sit along its eastern side.
The Airport Link tunnel ties much of the area to the city. Opened in 2012, the 6.7 km toll road runs beneath the inner north from Bowen Hills, right beside Herston, out to Kedron and the airport. With our workshop at that southern doorstep, northside jobs are a short trip away. Nundah is roughly 8 km by road, Aspley around 13 km and Bracken Ridge around 19 km. Afternoon peak traffic can stretch those times, so we give you an estimated arrival when you book.
